The Global Sustainable Development Goals 2030 Agenda

Itach-Maaki – Women Lawyers for Social Justice, together with the Heschel Center for Sustainability and civil society umbrella organization, Civic Leadership, is working to promote the 2030 Agenda in Israel, with the collaboration of the Heinrich Boell Foundation
As part of this, we submitted a Position Paper on behalf of a broad coalition of civil society organizations from a wide range of areas of expertise and practice. The position paper was submitted to the government and attached as an appendix to the government report submitted to the UN in July 2019.
The position paper was written as part of an open and participatory discussion of the Israeli civil society coalition, which will work long-term to promote change inspired by global goals, while studying and comparing similar coalitions around the world. The position paper seeks to lay a cornerstone for the implementation of Agenda 2030 from the perspective of civil society and presents the necessary mechanisms for implementing the objectives in Israel. The paper was drafted as part of two intensive work sessions (February and March 2019) that were attended by representatives of over 40 civil society organizations from a variety of areas of expertise and activities.
In July 2019, the government approved a decision to incorporate the SDGs into its programs while consulting with civil society organizations, see the government’s publication here.
We hosted a conference online during COVID-19.
On May 26th, our coalition hosted a webinar entitled The Corona Crisis and the SDGs in which we discussed how to view the COVID-19 pandemic and post-crisis response plans through the framework of the SDGs, emphasizing its values of “no trade-offs” and “no one left behind”, which we consider to be absolutely essential in ensuring a just transition.
The webinar featured a keynote address by Jacob Trollbeck, who developed the visual language of the SDGs. Following his remarks, Itach-Ma’aki’s Adv. Shirin Batshon facilitated a spirited discussion about the implementation of the goals in Israel post-COVID.

We hosted another conference in November 2019.
In an effort to streamline implementation, nearly 50 Israeli civil society organizations convened to collaborate and learn.
At the conference, we discussed possible mechanisms to achieve these goals in Israel; how the state can learn from the voices of different, often peripheral population groups; the relationship between the 17 goals and the benefit of addressing them all; and the great potential of inter-organization work to strengthen our work towards the SDGs.
This Conference was held in cooperation with the Heschel Center for Sustainability, the Israeli Civic Leadership Association (Manhigut Ezrachit), and the Heinrich Böll Siftung Fund, and with the participation of representatives of various civil society organizations, government, and private sector businesses.

2030 Agenda Conference: A unique opportunity for civil society collaboration in preparing

As part of its efforts to implement the Global Goals, Itach-Maaki is currently drafting a comparative study that surveys the civil society activities to promote the implementation of the Goals in various countries.
Background on the Global Goals:
On September 25, 2015, the UN General Assembly, with the participation of more than 80 Heads of State and representatives from around the world, set out 17 goals to be adopted globally for guiding sustainable global development by 2030. Each goal includes concrete targets, so that all the goals together contain 169 targets that must be integrated and realized for the full implementation of the goals.
The Global Goals went into effect as of January 1, 2016, and all UN Member States are required, from this point forth, to report on their progress in implementing these targets.
List of 2030 Agenda Goals:
Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere; Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries; Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels; Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development
