The Historical Background of Implementing Resolution 1325 in Israel

Decision 1325 that was decided upon by the UN security council has been promoted by women led organizations from all over the world. In Israel as well, women led organizations are the ones that led and are still leading the implementation of the decision in the past 20 years.
In 2005, the “Isha L’Isha” organization together with the “Itach-Ma’aki” association and many other organizations, led to a legislative amendment in Israel. After the legislative amendment, the “Itach-Ma’aki” association submitted eight petitions to the high court of justice against committees that hadn’t implemented the law. Only recently, along with the Rackman center and on behalf of 13 other organizations, another petition has been submitted against the National security council’s expert committee for coping with Covid-19 which didn’t include any women. In the petition we demanded female representation in the committee and especially of women from minority groups.
From 2012 to 2014 the “Itach-Ma’aki” association along with the Center for the Advancement of Women in the Public Sphere (WIPS) in the Van Leer institute, and the “Agenda” (ANU) organization, led a coalition of over thirty civil society organizations that co-wrote an action plan for the implementation of the decision 1325 in Israel that was submitted to the government.
From 2016 to 2018, the “Itach-Ma’aki” association, the “Women Wage Peace” organization, and the “Adam” institute for democracy and peace, expanded the circles of women who work in the field of peace and security by training and supporting over 500 women from diverse groups in the population.
In the past two years, we have put together an idea formulating team of female experts from different groups and organizations that accompany the 1325 project.
Alongside the “Itach-Ma’aki” association, there worked and are still working dozens of organizations and independent activists in order to push forth the principles of decision 1325. We may not always agree on everything, including the interpretation to decision 1325, its clauses or its implementations, but we are all united in agreeing with notion that decision 1325 in an important and relevant tool to the reality of our lives- and that it is crucial to implement it starting now.
